HISTORICAL FICTION rec by [personal profile] petzipellepingo

Jack Finney
Time and Again

This classic tale was written in 1970 and has to do with time travel from the present New York to 1882 Gilded Age NYC. It had wonderful photos and sketches and as a New Yorker, I loved hearing about past and present NY landmarks. It also had a twisty killer ending!

HISTORICAL FICTION/MYSTERY

Lindsey Davis
The Jupiter Myth

Marcus Didius Falco: Book 14 . A mystery set in 1st century Britain. Falco is an enforcer for the Emperor and is sent to Londonium in Britain. He finds an old gang nemesis, meets a former love and adopts a street child. The Guardian review, “This is historical noir lite, with a healthy disregard for pomposity”. Fun read!

MYSTERY/POLICE PROCEDURAL

Jo Nesbø
The Devil's Star

Harry Hole: Book 5. A young woman is murdered in her Oslo flat. A tiny red diamond in the shape of a five-pointed star — a pentagram, the devil’s star is found. Detective Harry Hole is a loner. He drinks, he's prickly and he doesn't like authority. But he is more than a cliche cop. Nesbo brings many details to Harry personality, a fully developed supporting cast and a well crafted plot as well as Oslo’s atmosphere. It is a fast paced read.

HUMOR

Janet Evanovich
Smokin' Seventeen

Stephanie Plum by the Numbers: Book 17. The bail bonds office has burned to the ground, and bodies are turning up in the construction lot. Bella, Morelli’s GM, puts a vordo sex curse on Stephanie and she has sex with both Ranger and Morelli. A third guy, Dave, ex-high school football star turned stalker chef [and easily seen as murderer]. Light chick-lit/mystery. A little laughter. Stephanie MAY make a choice in next book.

Daylight Savings and the evenings are brighter!

I'm still posting on LJ but I've been peeking at my friend's list here at DW. If there is anyone I've not added, please let me know.

Happy St Patrick's Day!

I haven't been reading much at DW [or at LJ either] but I wish everyone a happy weekend.

September has been defined as a new beginning - I guess that's because of school starting. I had three children with their starts and then I taught [as a librarian and teacher] for years. Thus, January always placed second after September as the launch of a new year.

Many of my friends from LJ have moved or cross-posted /from to DW so I may look into it. The icon count is daunting, however. I have paid the extra bit for LJ icons 'cause I love my icons so. Probably, I will delay any move for a while.

Happy September, everyone.
